Guru Tegh Bhadhur Sahib and his time in Bhora – an
Irrelevant Controversy
Last week, in many Gurudawaras, we celebrated
Guru Tegh Bhadhur Sahib’s Shahidi Gurupurab
(the Martyrdom Day). A recurring controversial theme that is
often presented on this Gurupurab by some well-meaning
individuals is that Guru Sahib NEVER spent 26 or so years
mediating in an underground secluded place (referred to in
historical discourse as Bhora)
because they say such practice is against Gurmat.
Some of these individuals are very knowledgeable about
gurubani and claim that they in fact have the evidence to
prove that Guru Sahib did not spend any time in a Bhora.
I personally do not care who is right – those
who believe in this historical fact or those who do not
believe in it. However, what is unsettling is that I have
never seen these same individuals (who are claiming Guru
Sahib never spent any time in Bhora)
spoke up against the popular belief that Guru
Angad Sahib (Bhai Lehna) used to be a worshipper of a Devi
until he came into contact with Guru Nanak Sahib. Idol
worship, as I understand, is against Gurmat but we do not
talk about Guru Angad Sahib’s belief in idol worship because
it all happened when he was Bhai Lehna and that is BEFORE he
became a Guru.
Let us please keep in mind that Guru Tegh
Bhadhur Sahib is believed to have meditated in a Bhora in
a village called Bakala as an ORDINARY Sikh. He was not GURU
at that time.
If we do not have a problem with Guru Angad
Sahib’s Hindu ritualistic practices before he became Guru
than why we have with Guru Tegh Bhadhur Sahib’s practices
and his mediation before he became a Guru whether it is
consistent with Gurmat or not.
Many of us come to the Gurudawara stages or
go to other public forums and make statements to pursue some
agenda that is handed down to us by some self-proclaimed
reformers of Sikh
Panth. They don’t seem to think for themselves.
First we had Hukumnama (a
Sikh edict) that split the Sikh Sangat and Sikh Gurudawaras
around the globe; now we have these individuals who are out
to promote controversies to further create unpleasantness in
Gurudawaras and may be another split in Sikh Sangat. These
individuals who ask for time to speak from Gurudawara stages
to promote such unpleasantness are out to satisfy their own Haumain (ego)
by disturbing the sanctity of Guru Granth Sahib. They come
to Gurudawaras and ask others to listen to their points of
view but they themselves are not open to listening to others
– a blatant display of Haumain.
