Sidhu roughed up at rally in Jammu for distorting Gurbani
Chandigarh, (Dec 14, 2014): A group of unidentified Sikh youth roughed up Bharatiya
Janata Party’s former Amritsar MP Navjot Singh Sidhu on Saturday when he was
leaving Gandhinagar in Jammu after addressing an election rally.
Sidhu was campaigning for the BJP candidate from the constituency which will
go for polling on December 20.
According to reports, the youth, who were carrying black flags, raised
slogans against Sidhu and criticised him for distorting the gurbani. They
also asked him to leave Jammu.
The rear window pane of the vehicle in which Sidhu was travelling was also
broken.
SHO of Gandhinagar police station, Paramjit Singh, confirmed the incident
and said the situation was brought under control as police whisked the
former MP away from the spot.
“It was a public meeting and the incident occurred around 7.15 pm when Sidhu,
along with other BJP leaders, started leaving the venue. A group of Sikh
youth started raising slogans against him and pushed him. In the chaos, a
few turbans were tossed and somebody hit the rear window pane of the Toyota
Innova car in which he was travelling,” informed the SHO, adding that
arrangements were made for 500 people in the rally but 2,500 people turned
up at the venue, leading to confusion.
About a month ago, Sidhu had landed in controversy for distorting the
gurbani while taking part in a religious function in Ludhiana.
Former president of Jammu and Kashmir Gurdwara Management Board, Sudarshan
Singh Wazir, said Sikhs living in Jammu were anguished by Sidhu’s act of
distorting the gurbani.
Reportedly, after the incident, Sidhu was asked by the BJP high command to
leave Jammu.
Wazir added that Sikhs in Jammu had also appealed to the Akal Takht to
summon the BJP leader and penalise him.
Rajya Sabha MP and BJP’s Jammu and Kashmir incharge Avinash Rai Khanna was
also accompanying Sidhu and both were campaigning for former Jammu mayor
Kaminder Gupta.
So far, no case has been registered. Despite repeated attempts, Sidhu was
not available for comments.
