Two Sikh Gentlemen Gunned Down in California

Law Enforcement Urged to Investigate as a Potential Hate Crime;
Community Asked to be Vigilant

UNITED SIKHS has contacted Members of Congress, US Attorney's Office in California, and Department of Justice to ensure that thorough investigations will be conducted to determine whether this crime was motivated by racial/ religious animus.  Community members asked to be vigilant and participate in awareness efforts about Sikhs.

Sacramento, California: The shooting of two elderly Sikh gentleman in the Elk Grove neighborhood on Friday, March 4, 2011 has left the Sikh community in Sacramento as well as the rest of the country deeply affected. Surinder Singh and Gurtej Atwal were on an afternoon walk when they were gunned down. Surinder Singh died, and Gurtej Atwal is in critical condition.

According to The Sacramento Bee, the police is investigating this shooting as a possible hate crime because of the traditional clothing of the gentlemen, including a Dastaar (turban) and full beards. UNITED SIKHS offers its deepest condolences to the families of these gentlemen and the Sikh community in Sacramento, and urges law enforcement and lawmakers to ensure that thorough investigations will be conducted to determine whether this crime was motivated by racial/ religious animus. The legal team has contacted Members of Congress, US Attorney's Office in California, and Department of Justice regarding the incident.

Kashmir Singh, UNITED SIKHS Director from California said, "The Sikh community in California is visibly shaken by this incident, which follows closely on a similar incident on a Sikh taxi driver a few months ago. Sikhs are targeted because of their external religious identity, which is ignorantly equated or linked to terrorism. Needless violence occurs because of a gap in knowledge about who Sikhs really are."

In addition to education, messaging about matters of national security are also important. Hansdeep Singh, Senior Staff Attorney said, "Currently, we live in a climate where government officials, like Congressman Peter King, seek to alienate religious minorities by calling for hearings that only discuss extremism within the Muslim community. Our history is rife with examples of targeting minority communities (i.e. Japanese), instead, we should examine the impact of how vilifying a particular group permeates the societal consciousness and inevitably leads to hate or bias based attacks."

ਵਾਸ਼ਿੰਗਟਨ, (7 ਮਾਰਚ, ਪੀ.ਐਸ.ਐਨ): ਅਮਰੀਕਾ 'ਚ ਸਿੱਖ ਭਾਈਚਾਰੇ ਦੇ ਦੋ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਤੇ ਹੋਏ ਜਾਨਲੇਵਾ ਹਮਲੇ ਦੇ ਦੋਸ਼ੀਆਂ ਦੀ ਜਾਣਕਾਰੀ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਨੂੰ 2.25 ਲੱਖ ਰੁਪਏ ਦਾ ਇਨਾਮ ਦਿੱਤੇ ਜਾਣ ਦਾ ਐਲਾਨ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ। ਇਹ ਐਲਾਨ ਉਥੇ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਮੁਸਲਮਾਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਇੱਕ ਸਮੂਹ ਨੇ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ। ਉਤਰੀ ਕੈਲੀਫੋਰਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਸਕਾਰਮੈਂਟੋ 'ਚ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਸੁਰਿੰਦਰ ਸਿੰਘ (68) ਅਤੇ ਗੁਰਮੇਜ਼ ਅਟਵਾਲ (78) ਨੂੰ ਬੀਤੇ ਸ਼ੁੱਕਰਵਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਅਣਪਛਾਤੇ ਹਮਲਾਵਰਾਂ ਨੇ ਗੋਲੀ ਮਾਰ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਸੀ, ਜਦੋਂ ਉਹ ਸ਼ਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਸੈਰ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਨਿਕਲੇ ਸੀ। ਇਸ ਹਮਲੇ 'ਚ ਸੁਰਿੰਦਰ ਦੀ ਮੌਤ ਹੋ ਗਈ। ਘਟਨਾ ਨਾਲ ਨੇੜੇ ਤੇੜੇ ਦੇ ਇਲਾਕਿਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਦਹਿਸ਼ਤ ਫੈਲ ਗਈ, ਜਿਥੇ ਵਧੀਆ ਗਿਣਤੀ 'ਚ ਸਿੱਖ ਭਾਈਚਾਰੇ ਦੇ ਲੋਕ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਸੁਰਿੰਦਰ ਪੰਜ ਸਾਲ ਪਹਿਲਾ ਅਮਰੀਕਾ ਆਇਆ ਸੀ।

ਇਸ ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾ ਉਹ ਭਾਰਤ ਅਤੇ ਲੀਬੀਆ 'ਚ ਟਰੱਕ ਚਲਾਉਂਦੇ ਸਨ। ਸੁਰਿੰਦਰ ਪੰਜਾਬ 'ਚ ਹੁਸ਼ਿਆਰਪੁਰ ਜ਼ਿਲੇ ਦੇ ਪੰਡੋਰੀ ਗੰਗਾ ਪਿੰਡ ਦਾ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਸੀ। ਉਸਦਾ ਅੰਤਿਮ ਸੰਸਕਾਰ 12 ਮਾਰਚ ਨੂੰ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾਵੇਗਾ। ਅਟਵਾਲ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੇ ਨਵਾਂ ਸ਼ਹਿਰ ਜ਼ਿਲੇ ਦੇ ਫਰਲਾ ਪਿੰਡ ਦਾ ਵਾਸੀ ਹੈ। ਉਸਦੀ ਹਾਲਤ ਗੰਭੀਰ ਦੱਸੀ ਜਾ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ। ਉਹ 2001 'ਚ ਅਮਰੀਕਾ ਆਇਆ ਸੀ, ਪੁਲਿਸ ਨੇ ਇਸ ਮਾਮਲੇ 'ਚ ਨਸਲੀ ਭੇਦਭਾਵ ਦੀ ਸੰਭਾਵਨਾ ਤੋਂ ਇਨਕਾਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ, ਪੰ੍ਰਤੂ ਇਸ ਬਾਰੇ 'ਚ ਅਜੇ ਤੱਕ ਕੋਈ ਠੋਸ ਸਬੂਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਹੈ। ਕਾਊਂਸਲ ਆਨ ਅਮਰੀਕਨ ਇਸਲਾਮਿਕ ਰਿਲੇਸ਼ਨ (ਸੀ ਏ ਆਈ ਆਰ) ਦੇ ਸਥਾਨਕ ਚੈਪਟਰ ਨੇ ਵੀ ਇਸ ਗੱਲ ਦੀ ਸੰਭਾਵਨਾ ਪ੍ਰਗਟ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਏਲਕ ਗ੍ਰੋਵ ਇਲਾਕੇ 'ਚ ਹੋਈ ਇਸ ਘਟਨਾ ਦਾ ਕਾਰਣ ਨਸਲੀ ਭੇਦਭਾਵ ਦੀ ਘਟਨਾ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ।

ਚੈਪਟਰ ਨੇ ਇਸ ਘਟਨਾ ਦੀ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਕਰਦੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਮਲਾਵਰਾਂ ਦਾ ਪਤਾ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ 2.25 ਲੱਖ ਰੁਪਏ ਦਾ ਇਨਾਮ ਦੇਣ ਦਾ ਐਲਾਨ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ। ਏਲਕ ਗ੍ਰੋਵ ਦੇ ਪੁਲਿਸ ਪ੍ਰਮੁੱਖ ਰਾਬਰਟ ਐਮ ਲੇਨਰ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਫਿਲਹਾਲ ਨਸਲੀ ਭੇਦਭਾਵ ਸਬੰਧੀ ਅਪਰਾਧ ਦਾ ਕੋਈ ਸਬੂਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਹਮਲੇ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਿਕਾਰ ਲੋਕ ਸਿੱਖ ਸਨ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਪੱਗ ਬੰਨੀ ਹੋਈ ਸੀ, ਇਸ ਲਈ ਇਹ ਸੰਭਾਵਨਾ ਵਧ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਪੁਲਿਸ ਨੇ ਐਮ ਬੀ ਆਈ ਦੇ ਸਥਾਨਕ ਦਫਤਰ ਨੂੰ ਇਸ ਬਾਰੇ 'ਚ ਤੁਰੰਤ ਜਾਣਕਾਰੀ ਦਿੱਤੀ, ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਇਹ ਨਸਲੀ ਭੇਦਭਾਵ ਨਾਲ ਜੁੜੇ ਕਾਨੂੰਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਸੰਘੀ ਕਾਨੂੰਨ ਦਾ ਵੀ ਉਲੰਘਣ ਹੈ। ਐਤਵਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਸਥਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਇੱਕ ਬੈਠਕ 'ਚ ਐਲਾਨ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਕਿ ਹਮਲਾਵਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਬਾਰੇ 'ਚ ਪਤਾ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਨੂੰ 9 ਲੱਖ ਰੁਪਏ ਇਨਾਮ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਜਾਵੇਗਾ।
