Cop who forgot it all

CHANDIGARH: The SHO whose area witnessed the alleged killings of Sikhs in Rewari district of Haryana in 1984 has now become SP, but has forgotten details of the macabre incident.

Talking to The Times of India over phone from Sularia battalion of India Reserve Battalion (IRB) in Rohtak district, the then SHO of the Jatusana police station, Ram Kishore said, "He was away to Narnaul when the incident happened on November 2, 1984."

The only other thing he could remember was it was a "big incident." The police officer said the incident had taken place 27 years back and he was even going to retire next month. "Because of such a long duration, I have forgotten details and action in the case," he said.

When asked what has he got to say about the disappearance of the FIR number 91 of November 3 that recorded the carnage of Sikh families in Hondh Chiller, 13km from Rewari, Ram Kishore said, "Mujhe kuchh yaad nahin hai (I don`t remember anything)."

When asked how and when the case was closed and whether around 200 people had come to the village to kill Sikhs, he pleaded ignorance. The SP could not even recollect the names of two domestic helps of the victims who were added to the FIR but were later exonerated. What did you find in the investigation? "I don`t remember."

The SP claimed he did not even remember any detail of the incident despite saying it was a big incident.

Another interesting twist in the event is the lone voice from any political party then raised was the then Janata Party leader Ved Prakash Vidrohi who is now a Congressman.

Vidrohi said unfortunately neither Akalis, nor BJP nor any other political party had even visited the place then to either raise the issue or visit the victims. He was the lone voice. He still wants justice to be delivered to those victims, but asks why Akalis, NDA and their then partner Om Prakash Chautala did nothing for nearly three decades despite being in power.

Empathizing with victims, he said why these parties are raking up the issue at a time when SGPC elections and Punjab assembly elections are round the corner. He completely avoided any reference to the Congress and Bhajan Lal.
